The website, SurveyingCareer.com, and the Speaker’s Kit entitled, "Measuring the World Around Us, A High-Tech Career in Professional Surveying", are the results of a project by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS). Funding for development was provided by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), and funding for initial production was provided by Topcon. Special thanks to the staff at POB, in particular Lieca Brown, who played a critical role in coordinating the contributions by Topcon.
We are very proud of the Speaker's Kit and the accompanying CD that contains all the printed material within the kit. The kit is intended to bring the message of a career in surveying to young people from middle school to college age. Actually, the kit can be used to present surveying to any audience. The kit contains a speaker's guide and a narrated "practice run" of power point slides to assist the presenter in preparation. Also contained in the kit are copies of a new career brochure that can be used as a standalone presentation, and a VHS video containing a narrated presentation about a career in surveying.
Another aspect of this project is that we are currently working with the National Middle School Association to develop lesson plans containing surveying elements for their members to use in the classroom.
The CD is the primary vehicle for sharing the kit with anyone interested in making presentations. For example, once a surveyor has reviewed the website and materials and wishes to use them, we will create a CD and ship it to the requestor.
Shipments have already started to each State Surveying Society, NSPS Officers and Directors and each of the State Licensing Board offices. In addition, schools offering surveying education may request a kit.
